Appalshop, in Whitesburg Kentucky, has interesting films and CDs for sale. In addition one can find the Internet broadcast of WMMT-FM Radio, which has many interesting programs, including several devoted to bluegrass and old-time music. There is also a schedule for the Cowan Creek Mountain Music School, an annual week-long event in which mountain music, singing and dance is taught. This began as collaboration with the Cowan Creek Community Center to teach young mountain students old-time music, but now includes students of all ages from many different states.
The Foxfire magazine has been published since 1966. There are now some 12 volumes of Foxfire books, which document mountain folk life. Many of the folkways described in these books have disappeared. The Foxfire books are a national treasure.
David G. Hyatt has a web site devoted to the construction, music and history of gourd banjos. There are profiles of several gourd banjo builders, including Clarke Buehling and Pete Ross.
Bob Thornburg’s web site for Sierra View Acoustic Music describes his gourd and grain measure banjos. He claims Sierra View is "300 years behind the times and going nowhere." Bob also sell gut strings for minstrel and gourd banjos.
John Huron constructs mountain banjos, mountain dulcimers, gourd banjos, mouth bows and other items. He is a fine craftsman. I had the pleasure of playing a gourd banjo he built for Colonial Williamsburg - the banjo is a replica of a gourd banjo in the ca. 1800 painting in the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum located at Colonial Williamsburg.
Augusta Heritage, at Davis & Elkins College in Elkins West Virginia, has classes in music, dance, crafts and folklore. Augusta Heritage interacts with the local community through various programs. The State of West Virginia and Augusta Heritage have done much to preserve and document the folkways and music of the mountains. Attending Augusta Heritage events is a fine experience, whether you are a visitor or a student.
The Hindman Settlement School in Knott County, Kentucky, offers several programs, including an Appalachian Family Folk week and an Appalachian Writers’ Workshop.
Centrum sponsors many creative programs in regional and ethnic folk cultures, including the week long Fiddle Tunes festival in Port Townsend, Washington.
